How Much Raw Food Should I Feed My Dog?
Switching to a raw diet is one of the best things you can do for your dog’s health—and understanding how much to feed is essential to getting started. Raw food is significantly more nutrient-dense and calorie-rich than kibble or canned food, which means your dog will actually eat less volume while benefiting from better nutrition.
Raw Feeding Guidelines by Weight & Activity Level
A general guideline is to feed your dog 2.5% of their ideal body weight per day. However, every dog is different. You’ll want to adjust based on your dog’s age, activity level, and body condition.
Here’s a breakdown to help you calculate daily raw food needs:
-
2.0% of body weight
For weight loss, older, or low-energy dogs
0.02 × body weight (lbs) = daily amount (lbs)
-
2.5% of body weight
For dogs at a healthy weight with moderate activity
0.025 × body weight (lbs) = daily amount (lbs)
-
3.0% of body weight
For active or high-energy dogs
0.03 × body weight (lbs) = daily amount (lbs)
-
3.5% or more
For working dogs or dogs needing to gain weight
0.035 × body weight (lbs) = daily amount (lbs)
For Puppies
-
2-4 Month Old
For puppies 2 – 4 months old feed 8% – 9% of dogs current body weight.
-
4-6 Month Old
For puppies 4 – 6 months old feed 6% – 8% of dogs current body weight.
These guidelines are meant to help you make informed feeding decisions. Always monitor your dog’s body condition and energy levels, and adjust the quantity as needed. You know your pet best—and we’re here to help along the way.
